[영어 표현] Mission, Vision, Goal, Objective, Strategy, Indicator
※ 이 글은 제가 여러 자료를 읽고 검색하며 알아본 것을 토대로 쓴 것입니다. 제가 언제든 다시 참고하기 위해 정리합니다. 지역에 따라 차이가 있을 수도 있고, 제가 잘못 알았을 수도 있으니, 참고하실 때는 이 점에 유의하여 주시기 바랍니다.
Performance Management에 관한 자료들을 보다보면, Mission, Vision, Goal, Objective, Strategy, Indicator 등의 표현이 자주 나옵니다. 그런데 우리나라 여러 기관이 만든 자료를 보면, Vision을 Mission처럼 표현한 것도 있고, Goal과 Ojbective를 모두 목표로 번역을 해서 구분하기 힘든 경우도 있습니다.

미국 총무청(General Services Administration) 웹사이트에 게시된 "GSA Strategic Plan / FISCAL YEAR 2018-2022"의 11쪽과 12쪽에서 아래 그림과 설명을 발견했습니다. 여기에서 나온 용어 풀이와 비교가 무척 마음에 듭니다. (그림에 적인 영어 텍스트를 그림 아래에 적어 두었습니다.)

Performance Management에 관한 자료들을 보다보면, Mission, Vision, Goal, Objective, Strategy, Indicator 등의 표현이 자주 나옵니다. 그런데 우리나라 여러 기관이 만든 자료를 보면, Vision을 Mission처럼 표현한 것도 있고, Goal과 Ojbective를 모두 목표로 번역을 해서 구분하기 힘든 경우도 있습니다.

- goal은 '목적'으로, objective는 '목표'로, target은 '목표' 또는 '표적'으로 번역하고,
- performance는 '업무수행'으로, result와 outcome은 '결과' 또는 '성과'로 번역합니다.

우리가 이 성과(outcome)를 어떻게 성취하려 하는가? - Key Strategies ...
- ... represent a key approach or initiative that will be pursued to advance the related objective.
- ... may include, but are not limited to, major organizational or business model changes, service delivery model changes, new areas of strategic focus, implementing best practices, and/ or process improvement reforms.
- 참고로 Michael Porter's Generic Strategies에서는 전략을 (1) Cost Leadership Strategy, (2) Differentiation Strategy, (3) Focus Strategy로 구분했다.

우리는 우리의 발전을 어떻게 측정하려 하는가? - Performance Indicators ...
- ... are used to track progress towards achieving performance goals.
- The agency reports on performance progress in the agency’s Annual Performance Plan and Report.
